Cast Iron Boot Jack Pair Of Devils

Cast iron boot jack pair fo devils about boot jacks a boot jack, sometimes known as a boot device, is a small tool which aids in the removal of boots. It consists of a u-shaped mouth which grips the heel of the boot, adn a flat area to which weight can be applied. To operate it, the user places the heel of the boot in the mouth of the jack, stands on the back of the device with the other foot, and pulls his foot free of the front boot. The process is then repeated until both boots are removed. The boot jack has several advantages over the removal of boots by hand. By allowing the wearer to pull his foot straight pu and out of the boot, and by using his full body weight to hold the boot in place, far greater leverage and a much more secure grip are possible than can be achieved with the hands. In addition, the wearer is spared the inconvenience of having ot bend over or sit down to remove the boots, or directly handle them if they are dirty. The function of the boot jack can be approximated with a variety of other objects that may be on hand, ranging from a convenient piece of furniture to a rifle butt, but these generally cannot remove the boot as easily as a proper boot jack. Additionally, the sole of a boot still being worn can also function as an improvised jack, but the disadvantages of this last system are readily apparent. About these boot jacks if you have a copy of the cowboy boot book, text by tyler beard, photographs by jim arndt, you'll see a small collection fo early bootjacks on page 32. The ones in the book come from the collection of tom bailey and tyler and teresa beard. In fact some of the ones that came from my collection were purchased directly from fellow collector and pal, tom w. T. Bailey. These two are made of cast iron and are commonly referred to as devils. I've been told there's an identical bootjack pictured in jean lipman's flowering of american folk art, pg. 257, though it's without paint and is most likely one with significant age. Size they both measure 10-5/16 inches long. The width is 3-3/16 at their widest point.

Weight for the pair is approximately 2 pounds, 12 ounces. Condition it should be noted that these are authorized reproductions and are both marked with hallmarks.

In regard to the hallmarks you will find identical virginia metalcrafters, williamsburg restoration and colonial williamsburg hallmarks on both bootjacks. In 1951, virginia metalcrafters began its licensing program with colonial williamsburg, the pioneering restoration that would inspire many others to follow. The first restored buildings were opened to the public in 1932, and since then the restoration has grwon to encompass the entire 18th-century town with over 500 buildings. In 1936, colonial williamsburg began an innovative program to bring high quality reproductions fo antiques in its collections to the public. The williamsburg 4xx restoration hallmark is found on those items which have been approved by the colonial williamsburg foundation as meeting their exacting standards for authentic reproductions or adaptations. There are on breaks, cracks or repairs. One shows nice wear and a natural patina from years of use and the other looks pretty fresh with only minor paint loss.
